​Consonant blends are two or three consonants put together that come before or after a vowel in a word.

​

E.g 'st' and 'fr'​

​What is a consonant blend?

​

In consonant blends, the sound of each individual letter can be heard.

​

E.g You can hear the 's' and 't' in the 'st' blend.​

There are 27 consonant blends at the beginning of a word and 49 at the end of a word. Only 3 blends occur at the beginning and end of a word.​

Consonant blends at the beginning of words can include: bl, br, cl, cr, fl, gl, gr, pl, pr, sc, sk, sl, sm, sn, sp, st​, sw, tr and tw.
