  • ​A noun is a word that names a person, place, or thing.

  • ​A common noun names any person, place, or thing.

​example: The girl visited the fountain in the park.

  • ​A proper noun names a specific person, place, or thing. It can be just one word or more than one word.

​example: Julia visited Bethseda Fountain in Central Park.

​*Proper nouns always have a capital letter.

​Singular and Plural Nouns

​Nouns can be singular or plural.

  • ​A singular noun names ONE person, place, or thing.

  • ​A plural noun names MORE THAN ONE person, place, or thing.

​Rules to make nouns plural. (these can be found on page 44 in grammar book.)

  1. ​Add -s to most singular nouns.

  2. ​Add -es when a singular noun ends in s, ss, ch, sh, or x.

  3. ​When a singular noun ends in a vowel and y, add -s.

  4. ​When a singular noun ends in a consonant and y, change the y to i and add -es.

  • ​A possessive noun is a noun that shows who or what has something.

Both singular and plural nouns can be made possessive.
