Why do we Alge - bra?

  • Sometimes we need to work things out that has numbers that can change or are unknown

  • Allows us to perform calulations and work things out when we don't have all of the information yet

  • Can be used to design structures, make calculations quicker, coding, data analysis, coaching etc.

What is Algebra?

  • Algebra is the art of using letters in place of a number that can change or that we don't know yet

  • The letters are like an empty box, they save the place for a number until we know what it is

  • In Algebra there are some fancy words used

  • Some of these words are used in normal circumstances so will look familiar

  • In Algebra they have different meanings

Fancy language for letter. It means letter used in Maths.

Term

  • A term is actually almost anything in a Math sentence

  • It is a number or a letter or a combination of letters and numbers

Coefficient

  • Is the number section of a term that has a number and letter combination

  • In this example the 5 in front of the x is the coefficient

Constant

  • Is a number in a Maths sentence

  • Called a constant as it's value never changes

  • In the example 7 and  2\sqrt{2}  will always be those values and not change, so are called constants

Expression

  • An expression is a combination of terms and operations

  • Operations are  +    ×  ÷  2  +\ \ -\ \ \times\ \ \div\ \ ^2\ \ \sqrt{ }  etc.

An equation is any number of terms that have an = in between them.


No = means no equation.
