I can show whole numbers as fractions.

Getting the Idea

• Fractions are a part of a whole. If you shade the parts, you can show a whole, or 1.

• For example, a square can be divided into fourths. Each part is  $\frac{1}{4}$  , and all four parts is  $\frac{4}{4}$  . 

•  $\frac{4}{4}$  is 1 whole.

Example 1

• Mrs. Clark asked her class to write 8 as a fraction. What should her students write?

• Strategy: Write the whole number over 1.

• Write 8 as the numerator.

• Write 1 as the denominator.

•  $\frac{8}{1}$   is ht same as 8.

• Mrs. Clark's students should write  $\frac{8}{1}$  .

• How can I write $\frac{6}{6}$   as a whole number?

• Strategy: Any number over itself is equal to 1.

•  $\frac{6}{6}$  is 1.
