Some word groups can be combined to form one word with the same meaning. These words are called contractions.


When you combine the words, you use an apostrophe.

  • The words am, are, & is can be combined with pronouns.

  • Pronouns can be substitutes for common and proper nouns.

How to Combine

  • am - Remove the letter a and put an apostrophe in its place.

  • Example: I am = I'm

  • are - Remove the letter a and put an apostrophe in its place.

  • Example: You are = You're

  • is - Remove the letter i and put an apostrophe in its place.

  • Example: She is = She's
