Rising Intonation

For a Yes/No question, this is just the sentence with a question mark at the end (said with the voice rising at the end)

Tu habites ici? Vous parlez français? Il est en retard?

For an information question, we would have a question word, where the answer would normally be:

Paul arrive quand? Vous faites quoi? C'est le travail de qui?

Est-ce que

This keeps the sentence structure just like a sentence, but puts the question word up front:

Est-ce que tu as étudié? Est-ce qu'il est en classe?

Pourquoi est-ce qu'elle pleure? Où est-ce que vous habitez?

+this is the equivalent of us saying, "where DOES he work" or "IS she going?" Notice we do NOT translate the helping verb. We use est-ce que instead.

Inversion

Wit inversion, we switch the subject and verb instead of using est-ce que:

Avez-vous faim? Prenez-vous des notes? Es-tu arrivé à l'heure?

Quel auto as-tu acheté? Quand dormez-vous? Qui allez-vous voir?

Re-write using inversion: Elle est d'où?

Inversion has one trick we have to remember:

if the subject starts with a vowel: il, elle, on, ils, and elles, we must add a "-t-" between the verb and subject, for sound (as long as the verb doesn't end in t or d.

A-t-elle du pain? Reste-t-elle à la maison? Quand travaille-t-il?

Prend-elle le taxi? Font-ils le travaillent? Choisit-elle la bonne réponse?

If there is more than one verb, the inversion happens to the first:

Vas-tu venir en classe? A-t-il fait les devoirs? Pourquoi aimez-vous parler?

Negative questions?

If you want to use a negative sentence, the ne.... pas still go around the verb, but the subject is inside too (since it is hyphenated with the verb)

N'avez-vous pas fini? N'êtes-vous pas prêts? Pourquoi n'a-t-il pas te donner les papiers?

One note about answering negative questions:

Don't answer Oui, to agree: Tu n'as pas fait les devoirs? Oui. (yes you did it or yes you didn't do it?

Answer Non to agree (Non, je ne les ai pas finis)

To disagree, answer "Si" (Si, je les ai finis!)
