Evolution and Evidence to Support It Part 1

2
Charles Darwin
Is considered the "Father of Evolution". Darwin had man influences in his life from other naturalists (the study of nature), geologists (the study of the earth), and even an economist (the study of the money systems).
3
Charles Darwin
Through all the ideas of changing earth, what influences populations, and how traits are inherited Darwin started forming an idea.
4
Charles Darwin
When we went on a long voyage as a naturalist on a boat he saw many new plants and animals. He also noticed that some animals while similar were also very different.
5
Charles Darwin
An example is Galapagos tortoises. While they all are a type of tortoises they develop different shell and body shapes that best fit the Galapagos island they lived on.
6
Charles Darwin
Seeing all these difference and thinking of the ideas talked about earlier Darwin developed his theory of evolution. That species change over time to form new species based on natural changes to the population.

Multiple Choice
What is evolution
change in the gene pool of a population from generation to generation by such processes as mutation, natural selection, and genetic drift.
the available body of facts or information indicating whether a proposition is true or valid
a unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to offspring
was the international, collaborative research program whose goal was the complete mapping and understanding of all the genes of human beings
10
11
Multiple Select
Which of these 4 things lead to evolution.
Small Population
Non-Random Mating
Mutations
Gene Flow
Over population
12
13
Multiple Choice
What leads to adaptation
Gene flow
Small population
Natural selection
Non-Random Mating
14
We can see adaptation and similarities between different species
All of these observations provide evidence that evolution has been at work for a long time.
15
16
Multiple Select
What two bold claims does the Theory of Evolution make?
All living things on earth are related and that the evolved from a common ancestor
The evolution of living things is powered by natural processes.
Humans descend from monkeys
That everything is now as when they were first created.
You should be paying attention. Give Mr. M the code phrase "Dog eat dog world" and earn 5 bonus points.

According to the video, what is comparative anatomy?
The study of differences and similarities between living things.
The study of how creatures develop before being born or hatching from an egg.
19
Multiple Select
What things about a whale make it a mammal and not a fish?
Give live birth
Feed milk to their young
Warm blooded
Breath with Lungs
Have Gills
20
Multiple Select
When looking at the bones of the whale what is some evidence that whales and land mammals come from a common ancestor?
Their front flipper is structured the same way the arm and from leg of land mammals.
They have hip bones but no hind legs.
There are only small bones that relate
There are no similarities
21
22
Multiple Choice
According to the video, what is Embryology?
The study of differences and similarities between living things.
The study of how creatures develop before being born or hatching from an egg.
23
Multiple Select
When looking at two fetuses at similar developmental stages what similarities do we see between an ocean mammal such as a dolphin and land mammals?
Arm buds forming the same way and in the same location
Leg buds forming the same way and in the same location
Two nostril holes
None of these
There are no similarities
24
25
Multiple Select
How does the fossil record provide evidence for evolution?
They show intermediary species between the four legged "Land whale" and the wales we know today
They show similar structures such as the bones of the middle ear common to common ancestors and modern whales
That people like to make things up to fit their point of view
That a lot of things have bones... big whoop.
