2

Types of Energy

There are TWO MAIN types/categories of energy.

Kinetic [MOVEMENT]

Potential [STORED]

3

Open Ended

Give ONE example of Kinetic Energy.

4

Open Ended

Give ONE example of Potential Energy.

5

Types of Kinetic Energy

  • M --Mechanical [Moving parts]

  • E --Electrical [Flow of electrons]

  • L --Light [travels in waves]

  • T --Thermal [heat energy]

  • S --Sound [is heard]

6

Types of Potential Energy

  • Gravitational [change in height]

  • Elastic [Energy stored in elastic objects]

  • Chemical [stored in the bonds of molecules]

  • Nuclear [stored in the nuclei of atoms]

1

Potential

2

Kinetic

12

Multiple Choice

The faster an object moves, the ________ kinetic energy it has.

1

more

2

less

13

Energy Transformations

Energy is NOT created NOR destroyed; it just changes forms.

When you turn on your chromebook [not plugged into the outlet] chemical energy in the battery is then converted to electrical energy. That electrical energy is converted to light, sound, and thermal energy as you use your chromebook.

If you are standing by a campfire, the wood is chemical potential energy. As the bonds are broken down, thermal, light, and possibly some sound energy are transformed from the potential chemical energy.
