Energy Pyramids
7.MS-LS2-3. Develop a model to describe that matter and energy are transferred among the living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem and that both matter and energy are conserved through these processes.
2
Your goal is to get at least 7,000 points!
Do your best! You can take notes in your notebook to help! :)
3
So far we have learned:
How to diagram how energy flows with a food chain.
How to diagram how energy flows with a food web.
Today we will learn how to diagram how energy flows with an energy pyramid.
4
Quick Review...
5
Food Chains
show a series of events where one organism eats another in order to get energy.
We model a food chain by showing the organisms with arrows between them in the direction that the energy flows.
6
Food Webs
have a bunch of overlapping food chains
are more complex than food chains
are more realistic than food chains.
7
Let's Check What You Know!
8
Multiple Choice
This diagram is a model of which of these?
food web
food pyramid
food chain
life cycle
9
Multiple Choice
The arrows in a food chain or web represents what?
They point to the organism that is being eaten.
It shows how sunlight flows within an ecosystem.
They show what direction the energy is flowing between organisms.
They represent how water is transferred within a habitat.
10
Multiple Choice
11
Multiple Choice
Food of almost any kind can be traced back to what?
the sun
animals
plants
soil
12
How did you do?
If you didn't do very well then perhaps you should go review the Kahoot on Food Webs
13
We already know:
Energy comes from the sun and is taken in by plants.
This process is called photosynthesis.
Animals then eat the plants to get energy
Some animals then eat the other animals to get energy
This creates a food chain!
14
New Vocabulary (for the stuff we already know!)
Producers - the plants that produce food from the sun's energy!
Consumer - the animals that eat (or consume) food. This food can be plants or animals
Herbivores - these are animals that eat only plants. They are also known as Primary consumers because they eat the first level of food.
Carnivores - these are animals that eat only other animals (carne = meat in english)
Omnivores - these are animals that eat plants OR animals

What are three things you see In this picture?
17
Multiple Choice
Where are producers in the energy pyramid?
Top
Middle
Bottom
18
Multiple Choice
Look carefully at this diagram. Do you think there are more producers or more primary consumers?
More Producers
More Primary Consumers
19
How is the Energy Pyramid Organized?
By different trophic levels
The feeding position in the food chain determines what trophic level something is on.
Amount of energy available decreases (goes down) from the lower to the higher trophic levels.
20
Multiple Choice
Producers make their own food with energy from the sun. Which level of this energy pyramid represents producers?

Consumers cannot make their own food and must get energy by eating other organisms. Which levels contain consumers?

Primary consumers are herbivores that only eat plants. Which level of the energy pyramid represents primary consumers?

Multiple Choice
An apex predator is an animal that doesn't have other animals that eat it! It's the top of the food chains. Which level of the energy pyramid represents the apex predator??

24
Decomposers
Garbagemen of the ecosystem!
They are the most important part of a food web!
Things like worms, fungi, and bacteria break down the dead organisms to return nutrients back to the environment.
25
The amount of useful energy in the pyramid decreases by 90% each time you move up the pyramid
26
Open Ended
Only 10% of the energy gets transferred to the next animal. Brainstorm where you think this energy may go. What is one idea?
27
90% of the energy from each level is used by:
an animal's metabolic processes
running
eating
finding mates
escaping danger
daily living
given off to the environment as heat
28
Let's check what you have learned...
29
Multiple Choice
About what percent of energy is passed on from one organism to the next on an energy pyramid?
100 percent of all energy gets passed
45 percent of all energy gets passed
10 percent of all energy gets passed
0 percent of all energy gets passed
30
Multiple Choice
In this energy pyramid, what is the proper name for ANY ORGANISM ABOVE THE PRODUCER LEVEL?
decomposers
consumers
producers
omnivores
31
Multiple Choice
If only 10% of an organism's energy is available for the next trophic level, what happens with the other 90% of the energy?
It is destroyed after it is used up.
It is used for life processes or lost as body heat.
It remains for the next trophic level IF the predator consumes ALL of the organism.
It is lost completely as body heat.
32
Multiple Choice
True or False. In this energy pyramid, the consumers on each level only get about 10 percent of energy that the trophic level before it has stored.
True
False
33
Multiple Choice
A pyramid shape is used to show the amount of available energy at each trophic level because...
energy decreases as you go up the food chain, just like the pyramid shape gets smaller as you go up.
energy increases up the food chain just like the pyramid shape gets smaller as you go up.
energy amounts are the same at each trophic level
