Simplify Square Roots, Topic 2-7

  • Page 27, Unit 2 Packet

  • Take out groups based on the index of the root (If the index is blank it is a square root)

  • Try to break down variables and numbers based on the index. Example: if you are trying to break down a square root, look at the number and try to find if it is divisible by any perfect squares

  • Chunk variables together based on the index. Example: if you have an index of 2 break down your variables to have an exponent of 2, take the group out of the radical, and count it as one term

3

Imaginary Expressions, Topic 2-8 and 2-9

  • Page 28 and 29 in Unit 2 Packet

  • i= square root of -1

  • Negative under radical, move it outside the radical and it becomes i

  • Operations with i, type into calculator. i can be found when clicking on the pi button located by the letter H

  • When subtracting 2 binomials with i, make sure to distribute the negative

4

Fractional Exponents, Topic 1-8

  • Page 36, Unit 1 Packet

  •  xmn= nxmx^{\frac{m}{n}}=\ ^n\sqrt{x^m}

  • If terms are in parentheses and raised to an exponent, distribute the exponent to all terms in the parentheses as the first step in simplification

5

Quadratic Formula, Topic 2-10 A/B

  • Page 32, Unit 2 Packet

  •  x=b ±b24ac2ax=\frac{-b\ \pm\sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}

  • Get equation equal to zero

  • Identify a, b, and c terms

  • Plug into the quadratic formula

  • Simplify (Make sure radical is simplified!)

6

End Behavior, Topic 3-4

  • Page 5, Unit 3 Packet

  • Even power functions end behavior goes in the same direction

  • Odd power functions the end behavior goes in the opposite direction

  • Negate the function the end behavior flips

  • Degree= highest power of the function

  • Check the end behavior in your calculator if given the equation!

7

Average Rate of Change, Topic 1-4

  • Page 13, Unit 1 Packet

  •  m=y2y1x2x1m=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}

  • You need two points to plug into the formula

  • You can find the points on a given table, or graph the equation in your calculator and pull up the table

8

Function Inverses, Topic 1-7

  • Page 29, Unit 1

  • Switch x and y

  • To find the inverse function: switch x and y and then solve for y

9

Remainder Theorem, Topic 3-8

  • Page 14, Unit 3

  • Short cut for polynomial long division to find the remainder if given equation and 'a' value

  • Plug in 'a' value into equation for x. Simplify for remainder value

10

Factoring, Topic 3-1, 3-2, 3-3

  • Pages 1-3, Unit 3

  • Grouping: Take GCF of first two terms, GCF of second two terms, combine the GCFs in parenthesis, rewrite the matching factor

  • Quartic Trinomial: Factor just like a trinomial, but use x2 instead of x

  • Quartic DOTS: Watch for double DOTS

11

Polynomial Long Division, Topic 3-7

  • Pages 11-13, Unit 3

  • Remember to check for missing terms and make sure the terms are in descending order before you start

  • When subtracting, remember you are subtracting the whole quantity. So, distribute the negative

  • Work from left to right trying to eliminate variables in descending order

12

Radical Equations, Topic 2-11

  • Page 39, Unit 2

  • Isolate the radical

  • Undo the radical by raising each side of the equation to the power equal to the root

  • Solve for x

  • Check for extraneous roots!!!!!!!

13

Function Operations, Topic 1-2

  • Page 5, Unit 1

  • When subtracting distribute the negative

  • When multiplying, double distribute or use box method

14

Finding an Equation from a Graph, Topic 3-6

  • Page 8, Unit 3

  • Turn roots into factors by negating the root

  • Put factors into factored form, set equal to f(x) or y
