The Emperor's New Robe

The Emperor’s New Robe

Characters in order of appearance

Weaver

Emperor

Emperor’s Guard

Setting: A faraway kingdom a long time ago.

Scene 1: At the edge of the kingdom

1. Weaver: (to audience) Did you hear about the emperor and his new clothes? No? It started a couple of weeks ago. I heard

about this emperor who spends all his money on clothes. All

of it! So I thought, if I play my cards right, I could make some

money out of this. Then I made my plan.

4

Scene 2: The Emperor’s castle, a few weeks earlier

2. Emperor: Why is this weaver standing here?

3.Weaver: Mighty emperor, I am no ordinary weaver. My cloth is amazing and magical. In a robe made from my cloth, you will outshine the sun. Also, only truly noble people can see my

cloth. When common, low-born people look at it, they just see a

big, dirty bag.

4.Emperor: (thinking) I must have a robe made from this cloth. Then I will be able to tell who is truly noble. (to the Weaver) Take this sack of gold and make me the most beautiful robe the

world has ever seen!

5 Emperor’s Guard: (thinking) I have a bad feeling this weaver might turn into a thorn in our sides.

5

Scene 3: A week later in the Weaver’s workroom

6. Emperor’s Guard: The emperor has sent me to see if the

robe is finished.

7. Weaver: (pointing to a big, dirty bag on a hanger) As you see, Guard, the robe is complete. Are not the colors rich and

vibrant? Isn’t the pattern amazing?

8. Emperor’s Guard: (thinking ) All I see is a big, dirty bag! But if I admit that, then everyone will know I am not noble. (to the Weaver) This is indeed beautiful! The color is astounding. I will

bring the emperor at once.

The Emperor's New Robe

9 (The Guard leaves and then returns with the Emperor.)

10 Weaver: Here is your beautiful new robe, Emperor. Take off your old robe and try it on. Isn’t it as soft as a butterfly’s wing? (The Emperor takes off his robe and the Weaver puts the dirty

bag on him.)

11 Emperor’s Guard: Emperor, that is a very handsome robe. It, ah, makes your eyes look so blue.

12 Emperor: (thinking) Am I not the most noble person in the all the land? Then why do I see nothing but a big, dirty bag? I can’t let anyone know I can’t see the robe. (to the Guard) Guard, lift up the hem of my robe. I will go out and show the people my beautiful new clothes.

13(The Emperor, wearing just the dirty bag, and the Guard, holding up the bottom of the bag, leave the room.)

Scene 4: At the edge of the Kingdom

The end

14

Weaver: (to audience) I didn’t wait around to see what happened next. I took the bag of gold the emperor had given
