A topographic map shows more than contour lines. The map includes symbols, colors, and other symbols. But one of the most important steps is to read a map scale.

Scale definition

- A scale represents the ratio of the distance on the map to the actual distance on the ground.

- All maps have a scale.

- A scale of 1:10 000 means that one unit on the map equals 10 000 of the same units on the ground.
