There are 2 basic types of poems

  • Lyric poems

  • Narrative Poems

Lyric poems....

Lyric Poems -

  • express the thoughts and feelings of the poet

  • generally relatively short; often unrhymed; often have a musical quality

There are 3 subtypes of lyric poems:

Ode

Sonnet

Elegy

Ode -

a long lyric poem that celebrates something, someone, or some event in life

Elegy -

a serious, sad, mournful poem. It usually mourns a death or great loss; a lament for the dead; a funeral song.

Sonnet -

a lyric poem that has 14 lines with strict patterns of rhyme. Sonnets are divided into 2 parts - "octave" = the first 8 lines of the sonnet; "sestet" = the last 6 lines of the sonnet.

a type of narrative poem often meant to be sung or recited; often has a repeated refrain (like a song chorus)
