What does this mean?

We are going to learn about ethnic and religious groups and we will learn about Christianity, Islam, and Judaism in SW Asia.

Judaism:

• Judaism was founded by Abraham around 2000 BCE.

• Abraham lived in what is now Iraq.

• Jews believe that they descended from Abraham and Sarah, the first people to worship Yahweh (God).

• Jews believe that God gave Moses the Ten Commandments.

• They believe that a messiah (savior) will lead them to the Promised Land.

Judaism:

• Believers are called Jews

• Holy Book is the Torah

• Place of Worship: Synagogue

• Holy Sites: Jerusalem, Wailing Wall

• Holidays/Traditions: Bar/Bat Mitzvah & Hanukkah

Christianity:

• Christianity actually has its roots in Judaism.

• Christians believe in Jesus, who preached a new religion of love and kindness around 30 CE.

• Christians believe that Jesus was the messiah (savior). 

• Christians are grouped by many denominations. (Examples include Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and Protestantism)

• All denominations of Christians follow the teachings of Jesus.

Christianity:

• Believers are called Christians

• Holy Book is the Bible

• Place of Worship: Church

• Holidays: Christmas, Easter

Islam:

• Islam began around 610 CE in Southwest Asia and the founder is Muhammad.

• In Arabic, Islam means “surrender” to the will of Allah (God).

• Muslims believe that Muhammad is the last and greatest prophet of Islam. (Other prophets include Abraham, Moses, & Jesus). 

Islam:

• Believers are called Muslims

• Holy Book is the Qur'an (Koran)

• Place of Worship: Mosque

• Holy Sites: Jerusalem, Mecca
