People elect representatives to make decisions and pass laws for them

What is Authoritarian/Dictatorship?

Power is held by a single leader or small group with limited freedoms for citizens

Based on religious law or authority

What is Unitary government?

Power held in one central government

What is Federal government?

Power divided between national and state governments

What is Confederal government?

Strong states government/weak central government

What is Parliamentary System?

Executive chosen from legislature

What is Presidential System?

Executive and legislative branches are separate, president elected independently

What are the purposes written in the Preamble?

Form a more perfect Union, Establish Justice, Ensure Tranquility, Provide Defense, Promote Welfare, Secure Liberty

What is Evolutionary Theory?

The idea that government began when families and tribes naturally grew into larger communities

What is Divine Right of Kings?

The belief that rulers receive authority directly from God to govern

What is Social Contract Theory?

The idea that people agree to form a government in exchange for the protection of their rights

What is Force Theory?

The belief that government was created through force, with the strongest person or group taking control

What is the amending process of the Constitution?

Proposed by a 2/3 vote in both the House and Senate, or by a national convention called by Congress at the request of 2/3 of state legislatures. Ratification requires approval by 3/4 of the states.

Why do we have an amendment process?

To allow the Constitution to adapt to changing times while preserving its core principles.

What does Article VI state?

The Constitution is the supreme law of the land

The process for amending the Constitution

What does Article IV describe?

The relationship between states

What does Article VII set up?

The process for ratification of the Constitution

What is the Necessary and Proper Clause?

The clause in the Constitution that gives Congress flexibility to make laws needed to carry out its expressed powers.

The clause of the Constitution that establishes that federal laws are above state laws when conflicts occur.

The government only has the powers given to it by the Constitution and must obey the law like everyone else.

Guaranteeing freedoms such as speech, religion, and the press.

What is Popular Sovereignty?

The idea that the people are the source of the government’s power.

Social contract; government based on the consent of the governed.

Why is a strong government necessary according to the Federalist Papers?

To maintain order, protect liberty, and prevent factions from threatening stability.
