gaining of land in the West. As The United States expanded to the West, conflict increased between the North and South as they fought over whether the new states would be “free states” (no slavery) or “slave states.”

Most abolitionists (people who wanted to get rid of slavery) were in the North. Because of the North’s industrial economy using immigrant labor, they had less of a need for slavery. The south had an agricultural economy that used enslaved persons on plantations.
