Your mother tells you not to leave the bathroom faucet on because it “wastes water.” You respond that water is a renewable resource, so it's no big deal. Who is correct? Why should we conserve water if it is renewable?

Mother knows best in this case! It is true that water doesn't truly “go away,” BUT the amount of ground water can be depleted in a particular area. That water may fall as precipitation in a different location. Less than 1% of Earth’s water is fresh water.
