What distinguishes experimental from quasi-experimental designs?

Experimental designs involve random assignment to groups, while quasi-experimental designs do not use random assignment.

For example: To understand the effect of different therapies, participants are given a choice to be assigned to the type of therapy such as Rational emotive behavior therapy, Cognitive behavior therapy, Art therapy and such. So, there is no random assignment.
