From Quizizz to Wayground
A decade ago, I was staring at a bug-eyed cartoon fox with Deepak, my cofounder and college roommate. It was a character in a single-player math game called WizenWorld that we were testing in a remedial education program. WizenWorld wasn’t taking off. Teachers needed more flexibility and students wanted to learn with their peers, not on their own.
We started over with a new name, kept a few of the cartoonish monsters (remember those avatars), and focused on helping teachers create interactive quizzes that students could engage in together.
Teachers took the reins, and Quizizz took off. We started hearing feedback like “you should add a homework mode, one of my kids took his class assignment home and reattempted it seven times on his own!” Our job was to listen, build, and repeat with relentless urgency.
Over the past ten years, our teacher community has transformed a simple formative assessment tool into a destination to browse, bring, or build any instructional resource.
We’ve evolved into a supplemental learning platform.
In recognition of the teachers going way beyond quizzes, our mission to motivate every student in the world, and even the time spent remembering how to spell “Q-u-i-z-i-z-z”, we’re excited to share that our name is evolving as well.
Welcome to Wayground.
Why Wayground
Finding a way to support every student has driven our work from the beginning. Early on, our group activities still allowed students to progress at their own pace rather than rewarding the loudest or fastest answers. Now, settings like “read aloud” have evolved into dozens of accommodations that support individual needs without singling students out.
We also need to create a shared space where students learn together, not apart. One that teachers can trust for a variety of needs to keep the focus on people, not tools.
Our new name reflects our mission to help every student find their way within the common ground of the classroom.
Wayground is broad enough to represent the diverse ways teachers use our platform and reminds us that joyful exploration isn’t limited to the playground. We also hope you spend less time explaining how to spell it and more time creating ‘aha moments.’
AI Where It Counts
As a technology company, we need to be intentional about what AI means for people using Wayground. Teachers won’t be sidelined by AI. It can’t implement curriculum or build authentic motivation. Students shouldn't be isolated behind screens. Technology can help us build human connections instead.
AI should work in the background to support—not replace—the human connection and critical thinking that make learning happen.
In practice this might look like a teacher confidently engaging a high-variance class with behind-the-scenes support like translation, accessibility settings, and difficulty adjustments tailored to each student. Technology aside, the most impactful moment from the student perspective is still when their teacher stops by their desk to connect with them individually.
Our hope for Wayground is that our AI can complement your ability to quickly read the room and make adjustments that help each student find their way.
Making Your Curriculum GO
Looking forward, we’re focused on the divide between curriculum expectations and classroom realities. Here are some new updates for the coming school year:
- Standards Alignment and curriculum mapping to find exactly what you need more quickly.
- Expanded student accommodations and modifications across different resource types, like video and slides.
- Bundling complementary resources together so teachers can plan more quickly, and students don’t have to join sessions separately.
- Flexible AI generation that lets you upload a single static resource and then choose multiple resource formats to generate and review.
- VoyageMath, a middle school math supplemental program that supports teachers in providing individualized feedback and instruction.
We're grateful for the students and teachers who have been part of our journey so far. Your feedback, your passion, and your dedication have brought us to this moment. Just like in 2015 when we gave you the reins and everything changed, we’re excited to see where you take us next.
Let's find a way, together.
