Catch lights are highlights in the pupils created by a reflection from your light source.

Round soft boxes tend to create appealing catch light in portrait photography.

V-Flats are used to block light and create a shadow in your scene. This tends to emphasize the light on your subject and create contrast. Typically they are a large flat cardboard but an all black reflector can achieve the same result.

NOTE: You are not required to use a V-Flat. However, I do want you to understand how shadows and light can be used to create contrast in your scene.

Clamshell lighting is made up of 2 light sources (or a reflector). It creates a "clamshell look" because each light source is positioned opposite of each other but they illuminate the subject.
