In the early 19th century, the US was concerned about European colonization in the Americas. The Monroe Doctrine, announced by President James Monroe in 1823, aimed to prevent European interference by stating that the US would not meddle in European conflicts or existing colonies, and any new colonization attempts would be seen as hostile. Initially, the doctrine had little impact due to the US's limited military power. However, as the US became a superpower in the 20th century, the Roosevelt Corollary expanded the doctrine, allowing US intervention in Latin America, establishing the US as an international police power.
