Soviet engineers conducted a safety test at Chernobyl's Reactor 4, but due to untrained staff and protocol failures, a nuclear explosion occurred, contaminating a vast area. Firefighters and safety personnel worked to extinguish the fire, facing lethal radiation exposure. By December 1986, a sarcophagus was built to contain the reactor, and in 2017, an additional structure was added to aid in cleanup efforts, scheduled for completion in 2065.
