Recep Tayyip Erdogan was elected as the President of Turkey, securing 52.1% of the votes in the first direct presidential election. The main opposition candidate, Ekmeletin Isanoglu, received 38.9%, while the Kurdish minority candidate, Selatín Demirtas, garnered around 9%. This victory marks a personal success for Erdogan, who has been in power since 2003. As the new president, Erdogan will transition from the role of Prime Minister, which he must vacate by the 2015 legislative elections, allowing him to maintain control of the country from the presidency.
