Gerald Ford, a Republican congressman, became the 38th U.S. President after Nixon's resignation. His presidency was marked by the controversial pardon of Nixon, economic challenges, and a public image of clumsiness. Despite these issues, Ford attempted to restore trust in government and improve foreign relations. He lost the 1976 election to Jimmy Carter. Ford's legacy includes being the only person to serve as both vice president and president without election and being the last moderate Republican president.
