Poverty Rate In New York City Falls To Historic Low In New Census

The American Community Survey reveals that New York City's poverty rate dropped to 17.3% in 2018, the lowest since 2006. The child poverty rate also decreased significantly, and median household income grew by 13% from 2013 to 2018. Mayor Bill de Blasio credits the $15 minimum wage and pre-kindergarten services for these improvements. This marks the fourth consecutive year of poverty reduction in the largest US metropolitan areas.
