In El Salvador, inmates are tasked with removing gang graffiti as part of a national initiative led by President Nayib Bukele. This action is a response to gang violence, which resulted in 87 deaths over a few days, prompting a state of exception. Over 7,400 gang members have been detained recently. The Salvadoran Congress has enacted penal reforms to severely punish the dissemination of gang messages and the marking of territories, with penalties reaching up to 15 years in prison. The reforms also increase the maximum sentence for gang membership to 45 years. The Mara Salvatrucha and Barrio 18 gangs have a significant presence, with thousands of members incarcerated, and recent arrests could increase this number significantly.
