Myanmar has signed a historic peace agreement with 14 of the 16 main ethnic armed groups after decades of civil war. This agreement opens the door for political dialogue, although some contentious issues were set aside to reach this point. The agreement will only be finalized after a meeting between the armed groups, with no date set yet. The president believes peace is within reach, despite ongoing conflicts in the north near China. Ethnic uprisings have been a part of Myanmar's history since its independence in 1948, driven by demands for autonomy and control over natural resources like rubies, sapphires, and jade.
