The first nuclear-powered submarine makes a 4-hour cruise in New York harbor to usher in Armed Forces Week

The Nautilus, the first atom-powered submarine, made its initial trip to New York Harbor to mark Armed Forces Week. After traveling 37,000 miles over 16 months, it arrived from New London, Connecticut. A cameraman was among the first non-naval personnel allowed below decks, showcasing the excellent living conditions. The submarine has been powered by the same uranium since January 1955. The theme 'Power for Peace' highlights Nautilus as the first ship of the future atomic fleet.
