A chimney inspector, F.J. Esson, becomes stranded atop a 150-foot smokestack in St. John, New Brunswick, after his ladder breaks. Firemen attempt to rescue him but are unable to reach him with their ladders. They manage to send up food and drink, and after six and a half hours, a Royal Canadian Air Force helicopter successfully rescues him. Esson, unharmed, decides this will be his last ladder job.
