Cuba has proposed to settle its old debt with the Czech Republic using rum. The debt, amounting to approximately $270 million, is a remnant of past trade relations with Czechoslovakia. Negotiations are ongoing, and the Czech Finance Minister finds the rum payment option intriguing. In 2015, the Czech Republic imported 892 tons of Cuban rum, and if the debt were paid entirely in rum, it would last them 130 years. However, part of the debt is expected to be paid in cash.
