The Hague's ruling on maritime boundaries between Chile and Peru has given Bolivia hope for its own claims to access the Pacific Ocean. Bolivia trusts the International Court of Justice to act fairly in its case against Chile. The Hague confirmed Chile's maritime boundaries up to 80 miles but favored Peru beyond that. Chile maintains that it has no pending boundary issues with Bolivia, citing a treaty from 1879. Bolivia seeks direct dialogue with Chile's new government under Michel Bachelet. Diplomatic relations between Bolivia and Chile have been strained since 1978, following failed negotiations.
