Colombia successfully recovered hundreds of pre-Columbian artifacts from the United States, including vessels, anthropomorphic figures, pots, and indigenous necklaces. These 274 archaeological pieces were returned thanks to the efforts of the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, international and national authorities, and the Colombian Institute of Anthropology. The artifacts, gathered at the Colombian Embassy in Washington since 2018, were repatriated through seizures and voluntary returns by collectors. Most were voluntarily returned by an American woman who inherited them from her late husband, who acquired them in the 1970s in Cali. The artifacts originated from six archaeological regions in Colombia and were made between 500 BC and 500 AD. The illicit trade of cultural objects generates around $10 billion, according to UNESCO.
