By June 25th, American troops entered the city after a fierce battle, paving the way for its capture. The GNIS silenced the last Nazi gas, and the GIS eliminated remaining resistance. By June 27th, the board fell, and 39,000 Nazis were captured, surprised by their swift defeat. Cherbourg was liberated, and life resumed for its citizens.
