Thousands of civilians fled from two fronts in Syria. In Eastern Ghouta, over 20,000 people left the last rebel enclave, with the total number of civilians fleeing since Thursday reaching 50,000. The Assad regime, supported by Russia, regained control of over 80% of the rebel stronghold through intense bombings. Over 1,400 people have died since the offensive began on February 18. Improvised reception centers were set up around Damascus for the displaced. In Afrin, over 200,000 civilians fled since Wednesday night. A single corridor allows escape south to Kurdish or regime-controlled areas. Turkey and its Syrian allies nearly encircle Afrin, targeting a Kurdish militia. The Syrian war, which began seven years ago, has become a complex conflict involving multiple foreign powers, resulting in over 350,000 deaths and millions of displaced and refugees.
