066 Gettysburg Day 1 - One Minute History

In July 1863, Confederate General Lee launched an invasion into Union territory to secure supplies and weaken Northern morale. The Union Army, led by General Mead, encountered the Confederates at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Union General Buford and his cavalry, supported by infantry, defended the town's low ridges. The battle began with Union soldier Marcellus Jones firing the first shot. Despite initial setbacks, the Union forces retreated to the advantageous high ground at Cemetery Hill, where Major General Hancock recognized the strategic value of the position.
