Breaking Barriers: Craig Breedlove and the Spirit of America

Craig Breedlove, a 27-year-old American, aimed to break the world land speed record with his three-wheeled car, the Spirit of America, powered by a General Electric J87 engine. Despite challenges with FIA regulations requiring four wheels, Breedlove focused on speed. On October 15, 1964, at the Bonneville Salt Flats, he became the first to exceed 500 mph, reaching an average speed of 526.28 mph. However, brake failures led to a dramatic finish in a pond, yet Breedlove emerged unscathed.
