The Philippines has begun destroying 5 tons of elephant tusks to shed its image as a hub for ivory trafficking in Asia. This makes it the first Asian nation to eliminate its police-seized ivory reserves. The 5 tons are part of 13 tons confiscated since the mid-90s, with 8 tons lost, likely due to theft. Ivory is highly valued in China as a wealth symbol and is also appreciated in the Philippines, especially for religious statues.
