Recent research published in Science reveals that Neanderthals living on the Portuguese coast consumed a variety of seafood, challenging the notion that only humans hunted marine life. Their diet included sharks, dolphins, mussels, and more, with marine resources comprising half of their diet. The rest included ancient cattle, horse, deer, goat, and tortoise. This marine diet may have contributed to human cognitive development. Additionally, evidence suggests Neanderthals in Italy dived for shellfish, using them for both food and tool-making.
