The Happy Prince, once adorned with jewels, now looks shabby and is likened to a beggar. A dead bird lies at his feet. The statue is removed to be melted, but the heart remains unmelted and is discarded with the bird. That night, many poor people dream of the Happy Prince smiling with a singing swallow on his shoulder.
