A 21-year-old Russian sergeant, the first soldier tried in Ukraine for war crimes, apologized in a Kiev court for killing a civilian during the early days of the Russian invasion. He admitted guilt, acknowledging the improbability of forgiveness. The soldier explained that he shot the man under orders from another soldier while retreating to rejoin their units. Ukraine plans to prosecute more Russian soldiers, having opened thousands of war crime cases since the invasion began on February 24.
