In 1928, chemists invented chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which became widely used by the 1970s. However, in 1974, scientists discovered that CFCs were depleting the ozone layer, crucial for blocking harmful UV radiation. This discovery was linked to research on Venus's atmosphere. Despite initial skepticism, evidence of ozone depletion led to global action to reduce CFC production. Molina and Rowland, who made the groundbreaking discovery, were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1995. International agreements have since curbed CFC use, and the ozone layer is showing signs of recovery.
