Why Are There Seven Candles For Kwanzaa?

Kwanzaa is a celebration observed by some Black Americans to honor their African heritage. It involves lighting red and green candles over six days, culminating in a final event called Karamu. Each candle represents one of the seven principles of Nguzo Saba, including unity, self-determination, and collective work. Maulana Karenga founded Kwanzaa to instill pride in African roots and offer an alternative to Christmas. The name Kwanzaa, with its seven letters, symbolizes these principles and is believed to bring good luck.
