What is Skin For?

Human skin, though seemingly delicate, acts as a protective barrier similar to animal scales. It is composed of keratin, the same protein found in pangolin scales. Skin cells are continuously produced and migrate to the surface, where they transform into a protective layer. This layer, made of dead cells, forms a waterproof barrier against microbes. While skin protects against microscopic threats, the brain helps avoid larger dangers.
