The moai, representing ancestors, were central to a cult of ancestral worship. As the population grew, resources dwindled, leading to conflict and the toppling of many statues. The island's culture shifted to the Bird Man Cult, and external contact led to further decline due to slaving raids and disease. Today, tourism is a key part of Easter Island's economy.
