Tensions rose among the White working class, fearing job loss to freed Black men. The riots escalated into violence, targeting Black individuals and resulting in significant destruction and loss of life. President Lincoln deployed Union troops to restore order. The riots caused millions in damages, displaced thousands, and became one of the deadliest in U.S. history.
