Respiration is a chemical process that provides energy for life processes in all living cells. It includes aerobic respiration, which requires oxygen, and anaerobic respiration, which does not. Aerobic respiration breaks down glucose with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water, and energy stored as ATP. This process occurs in the mitochondria of cells. Plants and animals both respire, but plants also photosynthesize, producing oxygen as a byproduct. Photosynthesis and respiration are opposite processes, with plants respiring day and night but photosynthesizing only in daylight.
