Germany, the most populous country in the European Union, has fewer inhabitants than previously thought. The 2011 census revealed a population of 80.2 million, which is 1.5 million less than expected. The number of foreign residents is also lower, with 6.2 million people of other nationalities, over a million less than estimated. The Statistical Institute predicts that declining birth rates could reduce the population to between 65 and 70 million by 2060.
