Thousands of Haitians protested in Port-au-Prince demanding the resignation of President Michel Martelly and Prime Minister Laurent Lamotte, as well as the organization of free elections. The current parliament's term ends on January 12, and without elections, a political vacuum could allow Martelly to govern alone. For over three years, the president has failed to organize elections to renew parliament and appoint local leaders. Recent protests have called for democratic elections and the release of jailed opposition members.
