Andre met Arnold and received crucial documents but was captured by the New York Militia. The documents were delivered to George Washington, who ordered Arnold's arrest. Arnold escaped to British lines. Washington offered to exchange Andre for Arnold, but the British refused. Consequently, Andre was executed for espionage on October 2, 1780.
