The vaccine's commercialization rights were acquired by Merck, and it could be registered by 2018 after regulatory reviews. The standard approval process takes a decade, but the WHO is prepared for future Ebola outbreaks. The recent Ebola outbreak in West Africa resulted in over 11,000 deaths, overwhelming health systems and economies in countries like Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
